How do I turn off read receipts?
What Are Read Receipts
Read receipts are the blue double-check marks that appear on messages after the recipient has seen them. A single gray check means the message was delivered; double blue checks mean it was read.
Disabling Read Receipts
Go to Settings → Messages → Read Receipts and toggle the setting off. The change takes effect immediately for all conversations.
How It Works Both Ways
Read receipts are a mutual setting. When you disable them:
- Other users will not see blue checks on messages they send you — they will only see the delivered (gray) indicator
- You will not see blue checks on messages you send to others — even if they have read receipts enabled on their end
This is intentional — the setting works in both directions to maintain consistency.
Re-Enabling
Toggle the setting back on at any time from the same location. Re-enabling does not retroactively show read receipts for messages that were read while the setting was off.
Read receipt preferences do not affect message delivery, notifications, or any other messaging functionality. Messages still arrive and trigger alerts as normal regardless of this setting.
